Year 6 Evacuated!!
Wednesday 14th October 2015
Dear Parents/Carers of children in Year 6,
I
am delighted to inform you that we have the opportunity to spend a day immersed
in the sights and sounds of World War II Britain as evacuees. The day will include
firefighting practice, an air raid experience in an air raid shelter, a short
talk by a real WWII evacuee with the opportunity to ask questions,
investigation and handling of a range of wartime artefacts, a rationed picnic
lunch and a steam train journey to the safety of the ‘countryside’ with
allocation of children to their evacuation homes (don’t worry we will bring
them back!).
The day will provide excellent stimulus for much of our
topic work this term. It will take place
on Wednesday 14th October and we will leave from the fire
station. Please could children be at the
fire station ready to leave at 8.40a.m. We
will return to school by 3.15pm for
normal collection arrangements.
It is suggested that the children (and teachers!) spend the day dressed in 40s style clothes
and bring a rationed pack lunch, to
add to the wartime atmosphere. We will be looking at images of evacuees in
class and children will be learning about food rationing so hopefully they will
have some ideas. Please don’t hesitate
to ask if you have any questions.
We are able to subsidise the cost of the trip due to the
kind funding from School Association. Because
of the subsidy, we ask for a reduced contribution of £9.50 towards the cost of the
trip and coach. Please complete and return the permission slip below by Monday 21st September. Thank you.
Yours sincerely,
Miss C. Langston
